What are crystal bowls?
Crystal bowls are remarkable tool called a crystal crucible, crystal vessel or crystal singing bowl made up of pure quartz crystal. Bowls are multiuse high tech tools primarily created for the semiconductor industry and are now used as multi-purpose energy instruments for therapeutic and metaphysical purposes.

Crystal bowls are made from 99.9% pure quartz crystal by a high temperature fusion process. The bowls are formed from pure silica sand. Each bowl is then tested, generally with a digital tuner, to identify its sound. Notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B connect to the human body’s energy centers called chakras.

The bowls come in many different sizes, ranging from 5 to 24 inches in diameter. The different sizes and qualities offer variety in the pitch, reverberance and mobility. The prices for the bowls range as widely as the sizes, generally starting around $300. More recent developments in the field have brought bowls made in colour, with handles, and precious minerals and metals such as rose quartz, moldavite and gold.

How do they work?
The human body has a crystalline structure within it, which makes working with resonant quartz sound a powerful experience. The bowls, when played, emit a resonant sound that is a vibrational force one can simply enjoy or work with energetically. The sound from the bowls assist to amplify, infuse, store, focus, cleanse and transform energy. In our technical world quartz energy is used in much the same manner in computers, clocks, microphones and so on

How does the sound affect the body?

The bowls resonate to a certain tone or note, some of which match the tones of the body’s chakras. However, no matter the pitch, size or tone the sound opens, balances, tones, harmonizes and energizes the body’s system. Some effects include:

TOP How are the bowls played?
The outside rim is gently struck with a suede or rubber mallet or striker. The mallet is then gently and slowly rubbed along the outside rim. The bowl will vibrate making a sound. This vibration carries the quartz energy of the bowl. Steps to play a bowl include:

1. Clear and ground yourself. Set your intention.
2. Place your bowl on a flat, hard surface, ensuring it is securely centered on the rubber ring.
3. Gently tap the mallet on the outside rim of your bowl 3 times, with a pause in between each tap.
4. Use this time to focus on your intention.
5. Hold the mallet vertically. Firmly rotate the mallet clockwise around the outer rim of the bowl.
6. Varied pressure, speed and hand/elbow positions create different tonal affects. Experiment. The bowls emit a range of harmonics.
7. Bowls can be played on the outside and inside rims, as well as clockwise and counter clockwise. Avoid playing the bowl on the inside rim for any length of time.
8. Use care and mindfulness when playing counter clockwise. Set your intention (thought) carefully at this motion draws out deep consciousness and negative energy patterns. It also awakens great awareness and timelessness.
9. Create your own method of playing/toning once you are confident with how to sound the bowl.

  
How do you clean a bowl?
1. Use a solution of distilled water and a small amount of bio-degradable detergent or a cleansing essential oil.
2. This solution can be used with a toothbrush or nailbrush to clean the outside surface.
3. Let it air dry or use a blow dryer.

TOP   What types of precautions should I know about before playing a bowl?
1. No crystal bowl seller warranties or accepts liability resulting from a shattered bowl. Consider insuring your bowl under household insurance for extra protection.
2. Your vessel is versatile, yet fragile. Be mindful when playing, caring for, storing and carrying it. It is best to handle the vessel when rested and calm.
3. Your intention matters. Where your thoughts are focused will directly impact the sound energy and therefore you and others around you. Attempt to be positive, pure and loving.
4. Playing the bowl at a high volume or with excessive force can cause breakage, due to the intense vibrations created. Loud is not necessarily better.
5. Playing the bowl on the inside provides a feminine sound energy. It also creates stress. It can be done, but should only be for short amounts of time.
6. Avoid “booming” your bowl by striking or playing too loudly.
7. Avoid playing a bowl closer than 8 inches from another bowl or object.
8. Avoid dropping the mallet on or in the bowl. Do not hit the bowl with the mallet.
9. Do not place your head inside the bowl when it is sounding.
10. Avoid placing or playing the bowl on your face or head. This could damage your ear drums and other important parts situated in a small, but vital space of the body.
11. Avoid playing a very large bowl in a small room.
12. Avoid exposing the bowl to extreme temperatures or sudden changes in temperature.
13. Breathe deeply before beginning and at the end to move your energy.
